From Attention to Analogy: A Framework for Classifying Introductory Video Shorts in Data Analytics Education
Introduction
Educational theory suggests that multimedia segments used in online and face-to-face instruction can differ substantially in their cognitive impact. Many video shorts are designed primarily to capture learners’ attention and motivate engagement with subsequent instruction. Others, however, can support deeper learning by fostering analogical reasoning, strengthening visual encoding, and illustrating the meaningful consequences of conceptual errors.
This exploratory paper proposes a preliminary framework for classifying instructional video shorts by their potential instructional value. We outline a three-level framework comprising Attention Shorts, Concept Preview Shorts, and Conceptual Analogy and Consequence Shorts. This framework integrates principles from ARCS motivation theory, advance organizer theory, multimedia learning, Systems Analogical Learning Theory (SALT), distinctiveness theory, emotional memory research, and error-based learning.

To illustrate the proposed framework, examples of all three levels of instructional shorts will be presented during this session. These examples demonstrate how instructional videos can progress from simple attention-getting devices to advance organizers and ultimately to analogy- and consequence-based learning experiences that promote deeper understanding and long-term retention.
