Design of A New Course In Digital Skills and Cybersecurity

Our university was the victim of a cyber-attack last year. We realized that all our students need the fundamentals of cybersecurity taught in their undergraduate curriculum. Even though we have a course called “Systems Security” which is an elective for our CIS (Computer Information Systems) majors there was no core course that covers the fundamentals of cybersecurity. We wanted to design a core class that is mandatory for all business undergraduates that will cover the cybersecurity concepts.

We observed that our students were never taught the following concepts in any of their classes: • Notetaking software • Desktop publishing software • Cloud storage applications • Email management systems • Digital collaboration and communication

We are in the process a course tentatively titled “Digital and Cybersecurity Skills for Business” that will incorporate these concepts into a one semester course. Our paper will discuss the process that we adopted to design and implement this course.
